Dor de cabeça para o transformador – O transformador adquire o insumo plástico pelletizado embalado em sacos ou big bags. Nessas embalagens, os pellets são transportados para os equipamentos de processamento em sistemas pneumáticos. Se a granulometria diferir daquela que o transformador está habituado, podem ocorrer problemas. Se os pellets são mais compridos que o esperado, apresentando-se na forma chamada de palito, podem ocorrer entupimentos nos sistemas de transporte pneumático, e mesmo nos mecanismos de alimentação das máquinas de moldagem, causando maior dificuldade de acesso para os outros pellets. No extremo, esse problema poderia até provocar o travamento de uma extrusora. Por outro lado, se há uma predominância de pellets menores do que o usual, os chamados finos, eles acabam se destacando dos outros pellets durante o transporte pneumático, que pode acabar também em entupimento. Além disso, os finos geram partículas que se acumulam nas máquinas de moldagem e em outros equipamentos de processo, podendo criar problemas de contaminação quando ocorrer a troca de produto. A variação exagerada na granulometria altera a densidade aparente da resina, e os efeitos podem prejudicar a dosagem e o ensaque. As partículas menores ainda tendem a queimar primeiro, por causa da sua menor área superficial.
