Please disregard "laparoscopic" as a possible answer to your particular question - that was carelessness on my part. The procedure was a laparotomy, not a laparoscopy.

In light of the comments made, I would now suggest the following: "Right nephrectomy was (then) performed via laparotomy on the animals in all the groups."

Jefferson D Boyles, ELS: yes, but "in all groups" would be better, or even "on the rats in all groups" (I'm assuming that rats were used).

-> I guess you could argue it either way, since the object is missing - it's shorthand for 'on the animals in all groups'. (I recently did a translation about nephrectomies on rabbits.)
