Military / Defense
Portuguese term or phrase: festa junina (specific context)
This term occurs in a text about the defense plans for the base of a valuable goods transport company against attacks by armed gangs in Brazil and the practise of these activities (exercícios na forma de simulados práticos). The sentence is as follows: "utilizando-se munição alternativa de cera e bombas para festas juninas." I understand that Festa junina in Brazil is the same as or similat to the São João festival in Portugal and also that, according to Wikipedia(!): "The "quadrilha" features couple formations around a mock wedding whose bride and groom are the central attraction of the dancing." My text delas with "quadrilhas", meaning armed gangs of criminals. Would I be right in assuming that this is the link and that the festa junina therefore refers to creating a mock attack scenario in which the employees at the base would put their defense plan into action? Has anyone ever come across this term used in this way? Thanks for any help.

June Fest (see explanation)

Explanation:
Hi Christopher!
In your text "bombas para festas juninas" mean "fireworks" used in this fest, the same fireworks used in New Year's day, in my opinion it definitely means "festa junina" in the sense of the parties occurring in Brazil during June.
Once I translated "festa junina" as "June Fest" and my client liked this suggestion.
As the term "quadrilha", in your text means armed gang criminals, not related at all to "festas juninas", I guess it was just an unfortunate coincidence!
I hope it helps!

Suggestion: Use only "fireworks". It will make more sense!

agree  fvasconcellos: fireworks, firecrackers... no need to translate, just adapt to a culture-neutral equivalent

disagree  coolbrowne: Sorry, but "June Feast" may well be a word-for-word equivalent, but it makes no sense in English, and it does not convey the intended meaning.

cherry-bombs and other noisemakers (adjusted term)

Explanation:
Yes, you are right, your questions should have referred to "bombas para festas juninas", since "festa junina" is just incidental to the context. The English equivalent is "cherry-bomb". As far as the given text,
utilizando-se munição alternativa de cera e bombas para festas juninas.
One should say
using alternative ammunition, such as cherry-bombs
