Explanation:
Not sure about recruits as this implies conscription, (as in, you have been recruited) but as a blanket term for all who have recently enlisted, conscripted or not, I would think "newly enlisted men/women"

Sorry, but the guess in the description turned out to be quite misleading. The word "praça" does not include a "recent" element. It just indicates the lowest ranks.

So I guess that's what we would call "enlisted personnel", consisting of sergeants, corporals, and privates


Vanda, I pointed out what is usuall in our country, but technically below second lieutenant all are "praças" (non-comissioned).

neutral  fvasconcellos: In the Brazilian military, NCOs are "suboficiais". May be correct in Portugal, though... //"Enlisted personnel" is perfect.

Explanation:
Military are hierarchically organized into OFFICERS and ENLISTED corps and there are different ranks for these personnel groups. Enlisted at brazilian armed forces are warrant officers (also called special or commissioned enlisted), sergeants, capes, soldiers or seamen. As a brazilian Navy commander officer, it´s a pleasure sharing with you a little bit about our rank organization !!
