Os canhões modernos tem ajustamento para a elevação do cano, portanto o tiro (o obus) segue uma trajectória balistica (subindo ate atingir uma altitude maxima e depois caindo somente sob a força da gravidade), em vez de ser directa. Os canhões antigos usados nos fortes e em embarcações atiravam um tiro a direito, portanto tinham menos alcance porque a gravidade faz com que a bala caia mais perto. Dai vem o nome de TRAJETÓRIA RETILÍNEA. (em vez de TRAJETÓRIA PARABÓLICA).
