OK, you do Register for a conference
But here, I think they mean it in the sense of events within a larger event, in which case, I would use sign up.
For a LECTURE, which I think is what is meant here, I think sign up is appropriate.
1] World Conference on x, y, and z : you register when you get there
2] the Conference has a bunch of lectures [conferencias] for which you SIGN UP
