Portuguese term or phrase: manifestação popular

Describing football and Carnival as the biggest "manifestações populares" in the world. Have thought of about 20 possibilities but none I´m satisfied with. Any ideas please? Tx in advance.

Sure, Jeremy. If you were to use "social gathering" as a standalone heading it would sound odd in this particular case, but if you were to say... and let's read the sentence, "football is the biggest social gathering in the world", it would sound just fine. I'm sure you'll get plenty of other suggestions and one of them will click just right. Happy to (try and) help :)))

Asker: hi Richard, thanks for your tip - I had thought of this one - I just think describing 50,000 football supporters as a social gathering is a bit euphemistic!!
