artilheiro geralmente se refere ao jogador que marca mais gols em uma competicao => top goalscorer/leading marksman/top scorer.
O texto original se refere a selecao brasileira na Copa do Mundo por acaso? Porque se for assim, eh mais provavel que a traducao deve ser "top golascorer" pq Ronaldo eh quem fez mais gols na historia da Copa do Mundo :)

neutral  Luciano Monteiro: Paul, I'm afraid "artilheiro" is often used in Portuguese not to mean "top scorer", but rather a prolific goal scorer.

  -> Not necessarily a striker - I have heard Rogério "Air" Ceni being referred to as "goleiro artilheiro", being the top-scoring goalkeeper in the world, with more than 100 goals to his name.
