Portuguese term or phrase: obras de arte
Not 'works of art' in the usual English sense, I think.
Context is a civil engineering company specialising in reinforcing structures like bridges.
"O mercado que mais nos afecta - obras publicas / obras de arte continuara a ser um mercado forte..."
Again, talking about tie-rods and expansion joints: "...pelo facto de serem produtos complementares em Obras de Arte e muito relacionadas com a nossa actividade principal" (reinforcing structures).
Does anyone know what this term means in a construction context? Could it refer to 'architectural' works like bridges?

Thank you for putting me on the right track, Ecapelao. The photo of an 'obra de arte' (plus others I found) suggest the term means all those ancillary works connected with the construction of a highway or rail line (e.g. culverts, viaducts, etc). I'm still not convinced that 'works of art' is the right term, however, and I settled finally on 'structural works'. Your pointer was invaluable, however.

artistic works

Explanation:
connotations:

works of art: calls to mind paintings, sculptures, etc

art work: calls to mind, 'finishing' as in the artistic sense. e.g. the art work in this 16th century wooden door is wonderful'

I suggest 'artistic works' as being neither of the aboev and thus not bringing other, and different, notions to mind. Your company may be involved in restoring/reinforcing old buildings, bridges etc that may be classified as 'historical' or 'artistic'.

public works/works of art

Explanation:
it actually is referring to public works of art. many engineering projects include public works of art such as large scale engineered sculpture and such. I believe the context is referring to an engineering firm that may specialize in large scale sculpture in large construction projects as an embellishment of the architecture.

reinforcing structures= possibly "retrofitting" against earthquakes (in California)
