Hi folks! I posted the context at the top, but I should emphasize that these are poor people who live off the grid in remote areas. Some have television sets, but often they are shared. In some cases they don't have the basics, but they may have a cell phone if they are near a tower. I'm imagining something like the home of Barack Obama's "granny" in Kenya, if you're seen those photos. When her grandson got famous, they fixed up a small generator so she could watch him on TV.

Asker: Hi Liz! I'm leaning toward your suggestion of 'optical drives'. 'Optical readers' (handheld scanners) are usually used by retailers, and I'm not sure what a person living in poverty in the hinterland would want a scanner for.
