Yes, I DID figure it out that the meaning usually associated with the aspectual particle "away" doesn't quite fit the meaning of "all of a sudden", but I suppose that's the intended effect of the original - to indicate that a lengthy process takes place in an instant because of the overwhelming pain. Or something like that. Of course, I may be completely off course :)
