despotic icons

Explanation:
despotic < gr. despot = Lord, to rule over; Despotikos - of the Lord

Exemplu/e de frază:
Icons De Robin Cormack - Plan of an iconostasis (fig. 23) - page 41
B: The despotic icons with Christ or patron saint of the church to the right and the Mother of God to the left

The Royal Doors most commonly have a representation of the four evangelists and the Annunciation, and on each side of them there would be an icon of the Virgin Mary to the left and Christ to the right; sometimes, instead of Christ, there was an icon of the saint or biblical event to which the church was dedicated. These icons are often called the despotic icons or the Sovereign row.

neutral  Annamaria Amik: few references, and it's totally unadvisable because of the connotations of "despotic"

-> “few” indeed, but reliable: demystification of the "negative connotations" in the reference cited; term also used by Prof. Cormack - Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge; Metropolitan Museum NY, British Museum, Byzantin Museum Athens

imperial icons

Explanation:
imperial e mai degraba imparatesc.

The present thesis tries to shed some light on the stylistic individuality of the painter, focusing on two signed icons (Pleaşa, 1730 and Şpring, 1733, both in Alba county). These two helped us to attribute to Nistor some other icons: one from Şpring, a group of three icons of iconostasis from Sânpetru de Campie (Mureş county), two ***imperial icons*** of unknown origin, kept in the collection of the Metropolitan Church from Sibiu, two icons from Mogoş-Micleşti (Alba county), two icons from Ohaba Streiului (Hunedoara county; these are considered the works of Popa Ivan from Rasinari) and two icons from Cuştelnic (earlier attributed to Toader the Painter). http://www.ceeol.com/aspx/issuedetails.aspx?issueid=5ac2cec0...

The register B is made up of four large rectangular icons, called the ***Imperial icons***. http://www.metaneira.com/probota_webpage/iconostasis.html
