В этот рейс техника вождения корабля свелась к астрономическим определениям направления пути вначале, частичному использованию радиомаяка и, главным образом, гироскопического прибора - полукомпаса в сочетании с магнитным компасом.
In the second instance, it appears that the полукомпас is a component of a gyroscope.
I also found mention of a полукомпас in the following excerpt from the Russian wikipedia entry on torpedoes-- Прямоидущие — с магнитным компасом или гироскопическим полукомпасом.
This time it appears to be used in conjunction with a gyroscope. |

| | directional gyro | Explanation: Simlply "полукомпас" does not exist, there is a "гироскопический полукомпас", or "гирополукомпас". In aviation, it is called a directional gyro. A real compass finds the actual north (true or magnetic, depending on what kind of compass it is) by itself; a directional gyro should be manually set to the north, and then it preserves this direction reasonably well, but should be checked against the compass from time to time (roughly every half and hour) and manually corrected if necessary. |

| Grading comment Since my article is pitched to laypeople, I am thinking I'll use gyroscope over gyro. Thanks very much! Very helpful and informative. Nice to hear from a pilot. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |

Asker: I also have to note that in the first example I've excerpted, the author does use "полукомпас" on its own, as he breaks down the components of the гироскопический прибор.
