The scene describes farm operations in 1940 rural Bessarabia.

А сама я, задав корм всем находящимся дома животным, занялась огрынжами.*

Работа грязная, неприятная: пыль, соломенная тру­ха и навоз сыпались мне на голову и, смешиваясь с по­том, текли по лицу ручьями.

*Огрынжи – Должно быть, от слова "огрызки". Зимой овцы и коровы получают лобузину, то есть стебли кукурузы. Листья они обгрызают, а стебли остаются в яслях. Их выгребают и летом высушивают в маленьких копешках, затем складывают в узкие скирды. Зимой это хорошее топливо (прим. автора).
