This is looking at Korobkov's interpretation of variability in assemblage. It follows from a discussion about the Bordes-Binford Mousterian debate:

Explanation:
This is what I would suggest. Again the term goes in quotation marks like in the case of "пласт" in one of your previous questions.

As I see it 'trunk' would help here to render the original metaphor like in this example below:

Instead of a narrow, unidirectional, and impermeable pipeline, we proposed a new organic paradigm for visualizing science training and careers: a tree with a richly ramifying, highly permeable network of roots and branches reflecting the broad range of inputs into the scientific enterprise and the wide range of career opportunities for students having a solid science background. Postdoctoral fellows are visualized as occupying the trunk and intermediate branches of this "tree of science."

In Russian "ствол" may be used in other sciences like linguistics, ethnography (http://eurasia.iea.ras.ru/reports/2005/Dir_1_3.pdf) etc. with other 'tree-related' words like 'ветвь', which is similar to English 'branch' in the meaning of an area of academic knowledge.

I also thought that 'industrial stem' may be a possibility but I would finally prefer 'trunk' because of an obvious association with a tree.
