мои друзья-программисты частенько употребляют две совершенно чУдных фразы:

"пинговать продолговатые предметы", и в общем смысл у них один.

По крайней мере, насчет пингования продолговатых предметов тут все было бы окей: пинговать = ping (тут сомнений нет), а вот idle обозначает как раз пресловутые баклуши, цитирую Лингво:

бить баклуши to idle, to dawdle, to fool (away), to fritter away one's time

В области сетевых коммуникаций (ваши друзья, наверное пользуются при этом программой Hyperterminal) есть команды Ping и Pong (конечно, они произошли от пинг-понга). Ping означает "перебрасывать информацию"

Этот сленг явно происходит от технической терминологии (как, впрочем, и вся остальная разговорная речь программеров). Совершенно эквивалентным выражением может служить \"to ping penguin Pinny\"
