during the soviet regime, the militzia had the power to detain someone drunk in the streets and take him/her to a miltizia station prison cell to "sober-up". There, the subject, receive a nice shower, clean lining and pijams. Next morning, he/she should pay 15 rubles for the services, if no money was available - a fine of 15 days of community service. In case of medical need, during the night in the sober-up cell, a medical officer (nurse, feldtcxher, or doctor) could be called to help. Hence, the expression "med-sober-up".

detox unit


Explanation:
Depending on the type or level of text you are working with, you can use detox unit (short for detoxification unit), which is basically a jail cell or group of cells specifically for drunks or people on drugs. Or you can use the slang term "drunk tank."

It is a holding cell where they put people to sober up if they have been arrested in a drunken state.
It can either be at a police station, or at a special facility for drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

It is certainly NOT a detox station. We have detox wards and it takes more that one night to do it. Вытрезвитель is much simpler and more harsh. So sobering-up (police) station is more appropriate here.

drunk tank


Explanation:
The term "drunk tank" is used by by local police for a holding cell in the police station holding area that is specifically designated for intoxicated people to be held (usually for 8 hours or until they are sober). It is sometimes referred to simply as the "tank". If in this context, however, the holding area being referred to is not within a police-controlled setting, I would use the term "detox" or "detox centre". Locally, these are run by the health and social services department of the government, and they provide a bed for intoxicated people for the night or until sober when they have nowhere else to go. This is different from "rehab" (short for "rehabilitation centres"), to which alcoholics (or drug addicts) go for long periods of time to dry out and try to break the habit.

Criterion of "arrest"


Explanation:
The criterion to be nicked was the ability to walk. If the "client" could walk he/she was OK. If he/she fell down and could not get up again - to the cell! Once I drank 1/2 litre conhatchiku (brandy), but managed to get home. Another deceiving drink was a chec beer called "Senator" (18%) - 2 bottles (1/2 l) makes 1 litre - atrocious, but I also made home.
