A closed-type joint stock company is one whose shares are distributed exclusively among its founders and can change their ownership only through consent of the founders majority. No need for long comments, I guess. That's just it - certainly, not 'open'. The закрытое is usually Close Joint Stock Company. There's no difference in Russian between 'закрытое/открытое' and 'закрытого/открытого типа'.

Предыдущие ответы дали Вам предостаточно отличных ссылок. Небольшое предостережение относительно собственно названий:
Слово "Корпорация" для американского перевода будет однозначно понято как Акционерное общество открытого типа, открытое акционерное общество. Как правило, большое по размерам - числу акционеров и т.д.
"Public" or "Publicly held" внесет больше ясности если акции этой компании продаются/покупаются на рынке ценных бумаг - означает, что публика (население) может свободно инвестировать свои сбережения путем приобретения этих акций.

Что касается закрытых компаний - Вы можете сказать "Closely" or "Privately Held Corporation"

Я бы осторожно использовала "Joint stock" - по смыслу это "совместная компания".
Думаю, что также следовало бы воздержаться от дословного перевода "open or close type", "society" etc.
Слово "Company" works fine!
