Russian to English translations [PRO]
Computers (general)
Russian term or phrase: игла
Струйные принтеры очень доступны по цене, однако это "игла" по расходным материалам, особенно по Epson.

Note: the respondent inserted the кавычки (as opposed to Yours Truly). I have reviewed the translations previously entered in the glossary. I don't think they apply here, but truth be told, I'm afraid I don't know enough about printers and such to understand о чем идет речь.

I apologize, if this sounded like I was talking down to you. Result of careless writing and Internet shorthand. I was simply stating a fact.

I believe this is the actual meaning, Michael, despite the fact that I used Anna's translation (yours came in after the fact). Thank you again.

what the responder must've meant is the printer itself is cheap but it costs a fortune to maintain it, to buy ink and paper.

Asker: Thank you, Anna. Again you save the day. Yes, I though it had to be something like a thorn in the side, a pain. Thanks!

neutral  Michael Tovbin: игла - as in "сидеть на игле". A pain it is but the simile is lost in the translation. Or metaphor. I always had a problem naming writing gimmicks.

endless spending on supplies

Explanation:
I think what is being said here is that "ink-jet printers are priced low, but require endless spending on supplies, especially the Epson printers".
I have not encountered "needle" in this context either. My guess is that someone translated this from English into Russian first, and "needle" was used in the sense of "injection", as in "injection of money". But this may be taking it too far.

(injection) needle

Explanation:
needle for injection of drugs

Asker: Thank you. Yes, I realized that and also that it was being used creatively on the part of the respondent. I figured, however, that those who know computers, printers, etc. would have a better shot at an accurate translation in light of their understanding of the issues.

Reference

Reference information:
Inkjet printers tend to be low cost and scale slightly upward based on print quality, extra features, and the ability to print on larger formats than the standard legal or letter paper sizes. While the one-time cost of purchasing an inkjet printer is lower than other printer types, there is the factor of inkjet consumables that must be considered. Because demand for inkjets is large and spans the computing spectrum from home to enterprise, the procurement of consumables can be costly.

Home-office workers have an ever-increasing number of choices when it comes to their printer needs. Prices for both inkjet and laser printers have dropped considerably low enough to allow them to compete with each other. There are two main options when it comes to printing documents from your computer- the inkjet printer, or the laser printer. Both have their advantages and disadvantages which makes the decision on which to buy harder. The main difference between the two is that the laser printer can print A4 pages at around a tenth of the cost that an inkjet can do it for. Laser printers are obviously much cheaper to run and they also make a huge difference to printing text and solid colour graphics- making them ideal to use for homework or office presentations for example. Whilst inkjets are more expensive to run than laser printers they do work well right across the board with al types of printing. If you want a good all round printer and don’t expect to be making too many prints then the ink jet is a good choice for you. A laser printer does have the added bonus of being quicker, quieter and usually pretty hassle free, depending on your intentions for use the laser printer may be a worthwhile investment. It really depends on whether you are looking for quality or quantity in your printer. Another point to consider is the cost inured if things go wrong- sometimes what appears to be the cheaper budget friendly option may in fact end up costing you more in the long run.
Before buying aninkjet printer it is worth weighing up the pro’s and con’s by comparing it with a laser printer . You may be surprised at which one ends up being the more suited to you. Where a printer is concerned you can now afford to spend less money, a cheap printer these days is just as likely to be a good printer as the market is very competitive at the moment.
