Russian term or phrase: отчислен из университета
Hi Proz;

I'm translating a medical certificate of good conduct (for UK) and have the term отчислен из университета. There's no context, just a date afterwards; does this mean the student correctly graduated, or was expelled? It's quite a big difference and I'd like to get it right, and have found conflicting posts on this board about it...

Thanks!

Thanks! Went with this in the end, although the lack of context in the originl text will mean I'll never know what happened to our unfortunate would-be medic.

expelled

Explanation:
Not sure where you saw a conflict, but I'm quite certain that "expelled" is the only right answer in this context.

disagree  Ellen Kraus: expulsion from universitary is a disciplinary measure. If the students´behaviour leaves to be desired or if they dont adhere to the rules, commit offences and such like, they are expelled from the university. see wikipedia "expulsion"

disagree  Mark Berelekhis: I usually make it a point not to disagree with answers to questions I myself offer an answer to, but it seems I've been given a green light. Google the word and you'll see it's not part of the English language.

disagree  The Misha: Nope, no such word in English - "English English that is". Do you say that in German?
1 hr
-> for heaven´s sake, Misha, that´s not a translation into Russian.I only tried to demonstrate that the part (от)числ(о)ено refers to the student´s number which is removed from the register.

disagree  sokolniki: Ellen, where did you get THAT?
1 hr
-> I think I´ve provided ample literature on THAT.

agree  rikka: would be fine in a translation from German

dismissed from the university

Explanation:
"expelled" is, of course, the translation that first comes to mund. However, since the reason for letting the student go is not clear, I would use "dismissal" simply because it sounds much less dramatic. Ambiguity is the bastard daughter of moderation but the mother of diplomacy! :)

-> yeah, but the asker couldn't send it down. Instead she sent down the student, poor creature.
