~ comfort class (see explanations) Explanation: ВПК = вагон повышенной комфортности, "enhanced-comfort car", which usually means an improved subclass in 2nd class sleeper cars (with 4-berth compartments). -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day1 hr (2008-09-02 19:50:54 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- James, I wouldn't say it's a luxury railcar. Although these cars generally tend to be newer and somewhat better outfitted, the official difference from the normal "купейный вагон" (i.e. 2nd class) is the inclusion of about $7 worth of extra services (e.g. a breakfast/snack pack, toiletries, etc.) into the fare. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day1 hr (2008-09-02 19:56:11 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- In fact, the reason behind this phrase in the original is that in the ordinary 2nd class you have to make your bed yourself, while in "ВПК" you have it made for you. Funny but true. |
