Страховые компании становятся хедж-фондами, и наоборот. То есть, страховые компании на себя начинают принимать несвойственные – а) риски; б) несвойственные им инструменты. За последнее время ряд крупнейших страховых компаний вышли с новыми продуктами, которые к страхованию не имеют никакого отношения. Это – «катастрофические бонды», например....Но это – один из страховых продуктов, который сейчас начинает активно использоваться.

Выступление на встрече посвященной проблеме управления рисками в России. Что за бонды? :)

Explanation:
This is a possible alternative, although I think that Christine is probably right. The point is surely that insurers are moving into unconventional areas, not usually associated with insurance. They are insurance products, but not as we know them!
