The Misha: This really depends on how exotic you want to sound. I can assure you most English speakers would have no idea whatsoever as to what an astrakhan hat is. Heck, I am a Russian speaker, and even I don't know.

-> 1) The original text has a distinct exotic flavour, imho; 2) as far as I know, барашковая шапка is sort of каракулевая папаха or кубанка, which is "astrakhan" or "persian lamb" hat, while "lambskin" hat is шапка из овчины - a big difference.
