Днестр очень рано стал; затем, при внезапно наступившем потеплении, вновь тронулся. Уровень воды, как при ледоходе бывает, быстро поднялся. А тут ударили морозы, и Днестр вновь остановился:
весь лед был в торосах и это при максимальной ширине реки.

Explanation:
This is how I would translate it.

The reason is that "торосы" implies sharp, irregular edges unlike "humocks" (if I understand that word right of course :-)

Also, "торосы" are usually (if not always) extended in a ragged line. Much like the ridges do.
