agree  Kiwiland Bear: I would go with "toughened", "hardened"in my mind implies becoming insensitive as well as tough. I don't think original text means that. But "toughened" sounds fine.

Если в переносном, то "five years at sear forged the character" (or "built the character").

Буквально означает "сформировали характер" или "укрепили характер", что и подразумевается под "закалкой".

"Hardened" не совсем подходит, как уже указывлось выше, т.к. подразумевает, что человек стал грубым, менее отзывчивым. "Toughened up" несет некоторый намек на то, что до этого человек был несколько бесхарактерным, тюфяком.
