I don't think this piece of text is big enough to understand what is meant, I feel that there was a sentence before about this отметка.
Either it's a mark on the tree, in this case the tree must have healed already after all those generations and the mark couldn't be seen (maybe it's a mark on the tree as a sign that gold is buried under it ;))

or
what is meant is that the old Vlas divided a certian area into plots, of wood, for example, and one of the plots became a heritage...
