Russian term or phrase: сдобное тесто
Looking for something besides "enriched" or "fancy" dough - do we have a succinct equivalent?

Никогда прежде город не благоухал сдобным тестом так, как на Страстной неделе 1941 года!

Explanation:
Never before the sweet scent/aroma of fresh bread baking filled the town as much as that Easter week of 1941.

You can not say that the town smelled of "sweet dough" or any type dough because it doesn not have that strong of a smell to be able to fill the town. But one can smell freshly baked bread/pastry. Kulich is the type of bread baked for Easter in some countries of Eastern Europe.

agree  The Misha: Great sentence, except why not just say kulichis instead of bread, or panettones, or whatever it is those Easter things are called? Also, I'd use a perfect tense too, as in never before had the sweet scent blah blah
