Russian term or phrase: который я захватил
This comes from a documentary I'm translating, it's a soldier speaking.

Потом, в последующие годы, 83-й, 84-й год, который я захватил—тогда каждый дом превращался...

I translated this "It was in subsequent years, '83-'84, when I noticed—it was then that every home turned into . . ."

I'm not really comfortable with this translation, please help me out!

Explanation:
that means he was still there. Has nothing to do with capture but with still being there. That's how I would render that:" when I was still in service / doing duty". Or simply "when I was still there"... wherever it was...

Explanation:
Your translation seems fine, but here's an alternative for you to consider, which avoids two "it was" clauses.

neutral  Michael Korovkin: Sorry David, I beg to differ. To me it's a chatty, almost non-grammatical, narrative. He says he was still there in the '84; and every home was... etc

neutral  Alexander Teplitsky: He was "capturing the time in there" if it would be more understandable...

'83-'84, a cruel time that grabbed hold of me

Explanation:
Vice versa in English: it wasn't him who held, but things which had been holding him during these years. Things that kept him there.
