I really like \"who had little grasp of politics\" (thank you, Dorene Cornwell for the correction). But since the source uses very plain wording, to be true to the source, I\'d go with \"a poor understanding of politics\".

Explanation:
"a keen eye for politics" seems to be a popular expression to describe someone who knows a thing or two on this subject, and I like it. So I tried to come up with the opposite.
