English translation:he/his
Explanation:
I myself wouldn't use "it." Unless you know the gender of the child, I'd simply use "he, his," depending on the need. You can also use "the child," but tht would be a bit stilted after a bit.

Stass, here is a good link showing why I wouldn\'t use he/she, or some form thereof: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jlawler/aue/they.html

He, She, or They?
People are increasingly using the plural pronoun they to refer to one person if they do not know whether that person is male or female. Until quite recently, he was generally used to refer to a peson of either sex, as in `Every child needs to know that he is loved\', but nowadays many people feel that such a use is sexist. He or she is possible, but is rather awkward. They is generally accepted in sentences using words such as someone or anyone, e.g. \'Anyone can join if they are a resident\'. More people object to they being used after a single noun, as in \'Ask a friend if they can help\'.
Interestingly, use of they in this way is not a modern invention: it was first recorded in the 16th century.

I feel in formal writing, it\'s still ok to use \"he.\"

Explanation:
Я в таких случаях пишу 'his or her', 'he or she'.

Explanation:
п. Лучше всего ИМХО писать he or she, я полностью согласен с коллегой.

neutral  Vladimir Lioukaikine: Ошибка в книжке, должно быть "s/he" (читается she-or-he) - Used as a gender-neutral alternative to he or she. http://www.bartleby.com/61/48/S0324800.html

Explanation:
ч.) - they/them/their (мн.ч.).

Does **your child** become uneasy, or do you notice **them** quickly hitting keys or the mouse when you approach **them** while **they're** on the computer?
scsc.essortment.com/childrenhacking_nbj.htm

If **your child** has a mobile, it might be an idea to ask **them** to call you when **they’re** ready to come home.
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/parents/ article_secondary_22042002.shtml

**Your child** becomes very secretive around **their** use of the internet, as if **they** are hiding something from you, and aggressive when you come over to **them** to look at the computer.
www.safetyed.org/help/childexploit.html

Explanation:
When I don't know the gender of the person (or when I need to refer to both of them), I always write "he/she" in all kinds of official documents.
