Russian term or phrase: главный бухгалтер / ведущий бухгалтер
точно так же - главный инженер / ведущий инженер и т.д.

ведущие инженеры и бухгалтеры находятся в подчинении у главных инженеров и бухгалтеров. Как это отразить на англ? Senior Accountant / Chief Accountant?

In response to your note Mikhail, perhaps I did not clarify my response very well. In truth there are numerous different ways to translate this term - all of which are very acceptable. In my opinion however, I cannot see any significant difference between those terms in Russian, unless you wish to particularly draw attention to the fact that the ведущий бухгалтер is an "expert in his field", in which case you would say "expert accountant". But I did not think that this was your intended meaning.

neutral  Maria Fokin: "lead accountant", leading accountant is an accountant who is a leader in their field, i believe

-> Sometimes it is also used for positions.

neutral  Callum Walker: I would agree with Maria, that to me, as a native, 'leading accountant' is misleading and it gives the impression of being a 'leader in their field', which I believe is not the intention here.

-> However, in Russian "ведущий бухгалтер" is quite another position than "главный бухгалтер". Even if my variant is wrong, then another variant should be proposed.

agree  cyhul: Leading accountant doent mean that he is a leader in his field. It means one who is leading the accountants. One who might not be the chief accountant but is the chief for this particular work

Notes to answerer
Asker: thank you for your variant for "Главный бухгалтер", but that was only a part of my question. I wanted to figure out how to render the difference between "Главный" and "Ведущий" into English.

Asker: I see your point Callum. You are right that I didn't want to emphasize the high qualification of the ведущий бухгалтер; As far as I understand, the difference between these two tems - главный and ведущий - in Russian bureaucracy is that the ведущие are in charge of parts of a project and главные are in charge of the whole project; The главные are higher than the ведущие. So from the comments made I understand that one of the possible renditions would be главный=chief and ведущий=lead. However with Russian administrative system we will not really now who is in charge of what unless we go see them at their offices :)

neutral  Igor Moshkin: The question is about TWO different positions! Please, propose your variant for "ведущий"!

-> The point i am trying to make is that there is no definitive translation for either of these terms. The main translation you will see in English is "Chief Accountant" - nothing else.
