Russian term or phrase: Прошивать суровой ниткой
Листы прошиты суровой ниткой. How to render? These are real sheets of paper made into a copy book.

English translation:pages are stitched/sewn together with a twine
Explanation:
This is what they use for books and documents. Also, baseballs, footballs, etc.

E.g.:
The finished leaves were given numbers, and two long twines were threaded through each end through wooden boards. When closed, the excess twine would be wrapped around the boards to protect the leaves of the book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookbinding

agree  David Knowles: "with twine" or "with coarse thread"//it's thread in general, treating it as uncountable, like other materials (cloth etc). Even "gold thread" would have no article. It's a nightmare!

-> articles! they are the worst for a Russian, aren't they? :-) Thank you, David.

agree  Judith Hehir: Yes, articles are a nightmare. Agree with David about "course thread," too. You're welcome. Don't feel bad, Angela. The best of the best never get those blasted things right all the time. They're impossible.

-> Ha-ha, Judith. It's truly funny. I've spent most of my life trying to figure out the proper use of articles, and the more I read the more mistakes I make. I should just omit them altogether. :-)Thanks for your support!
