Tech/Engineering - Mechanics / Mech Engineering / Pls share your ideas
Russian term or phrase: газоопасные работы
This term is used in the context of occupational safety and health policies in an industrial environment. I'm considering a few choices, but they all smack too much of Russianisms. Maybe you know a better one to use? Thank you!

work in [potentially] hazardous atmospheres - see explanations
Explanation:
From an article in the online Горная энциклопедия":
"различают газоопасные работы технологические, аварийные и ремонтно-технические"
- for details see
http://www.mining-enc.ru/g/gazoopasnye-raboty/

By the definition in "Occupational Safety and Health Manual" (US Dept of Commerce),
"hazard = a workplace condition that might result in injury, health impairment, illness, disease, or death to any worker who is exposed to the condition, or damage or loss to property/equipment"
http://hr.commerce.gov/Employees/WorkLifeIssues/DEV01_006463

This means that the key concept in the term "газоопасные работы" is "условия" rather than "работы"
According to the Russian article cited above, only two kinds of gas hazard may arise under any working conditions:
(1) hazardous (oxygen-deficient/enriched, flammable/explosive, toxic) atmosphere;
(2) potentially hazardous atmosphere (where gas composition may become dangerous due to leakage, release, chemical production of [a] dangerous gas[es])
However, the word "potentially" may be omitted, as on the OSHA page referenced below

Google search for "gas-hazardous works" brings relatively few results
All of those are from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, or Poland - and none from English-speaking countries

Note also that the word combination "[potentially] hazardous atmosphere[s]" is widely used in OSHA documents
e.g., see
http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owasrch.search_form?p_doc_ty...

No time wasted at all, Yuri:
- Горная энциклопедия pops up in top 10 Yandex hits for "газоопасные работы"
- the manual quoted above has been stored in my PC since I used it some years ago, and an URL is googled up for you in a moment
- the OSHA directory takes a couple of clicks to open using the right key words
- those words come with some knowledge of the subject; when it's lacking, no "time-consuming research" will get you anywhere
P.S. Support by any number of peers should never build "a very strong case" for an incorrect answer when precision is the only and ultimate criterion. Ergo, you never owe a single point to anyone whose skill (here and now) is just to come up quickest with word-by-word stuff

Asker: Dear colleague, you’ve built a very strong case with a lot of peer support votes, etc. But in my translation I went with the line of thinking, logic and research offered by Andrei B, as I thought it would fit in better with my customer’s American mind-set, etc. So I have to be fair and select his answer. But I still feel bad about my decision, so I’ll keep your bonus points in mind and use them on you on other occasions : ) Thank you for the help!

potentially dangerous gas work

Explanation:
Dangerous gas work - is perhaps not the best choice since it hints at illegal activity
But handling potentially dangerous gas work is closer I imagine.
