lost one third of their employees Explanation: It is most likely a typo. "На греть" is supposed to be "на треть". After that change the meaning becomes perfectly clear, but I must admit it is a very weird way to put it. native |

The institute laid off a third of its staff. Explanation: I was just about to answer and say there's a typo but Anya above beat me to it. She's got it right! No offense to Sergei above, but his answer made me laugh. It sounds like English but it's the kind that only non-native speakers would dream of concocting. |

lost one third of the staff Explanation: I know the problems of Pischino institutes firsthand. They did "lost one third of their employees" due to the brain drain. They never "laid off any employee". Olga N. |
