I'm enjoying the discussion, thank you for contributing. It's true that this is perhaps not an _exact_ translation of the term. But is there ever such a perfect version? A cornet in the Bristish army is a junior officer in a mounted regiment who used to carry the unit standard. As a pragmatic equivalent, I'd say it was pretty close to the source term. I wonder if the difference of opinion arises out of us not knowing who the target audience of the translation is. If general readers, my preference would be for the pragmatic equivalent, but I'd agree that specialists in military history might enjoy a more precise target term, or perhaps a footnote.

Asker: Thank you! I really enjoyed this discussion.....and yours arguments were right in certain degree......but the grandson of famouse Cossack General does not speaks Russian and wanted to get a picture about his granddad character - he made from cadet to general just in 12 years, amazing (but do not forget, that there was war, no party).
