In this context, the старшина is one of the Soviet troops who have entered Bessarabia in 1940. I understand a starshina in the Soviet army was a high-ranking NCO. Would the military experts among us see difficulty with using sergeant or master sergeant in this context?
(There's a veterinarian involved because they are cavalry troops)
