Russian to English translations [PRO] Science - Other / School subject
Russian term or phrase:урок труда
Hi! I wonder how can I say "урок труда" in English? I mean school subject in which boys learn how to fix something and girls sew or cook. Is it "industrial arts" as offers me Lingvo Dict. or "Design and Technology" as I saw it in Wikipedia? And how can I call a teacher who teaches this subject?
Здравствуйте! Подскажите, пожалуйста, перевод "урок труда" (как школьный предмет) и "учитель труда" на английский. Лингво дает такой пример как "industrial arts", но действительно ли он употребителен? может быть он называется "Design and Technology"?
you may want to ditch Home Economics in favor or Home and Careers. See The Misha's note above. Home Ec went by the wayside for the most part (in the US, that is) a few decades back.
again - if you want to focus on the academic value of the subject, then "Technology/Home economics" is my favorite. See an interesting article here: "Нужен ли в школе предмет, который мы привыкли по старинке называть «Труд», а сейчас величаемый «Технология»?" http://www.ug.ru/archive/24306.
IMHO, if you need the term kids in the middle school (aged 11-14) would use to describe the subject to their peers, i`d say you could probably use Mark's suggestion "arts and crafts". It sounds fun. The answer might have been different if you`d needed an equivalent for a diploma translation, for example. Technology/Home education is a higher level subject (please correct me if i`m wrong!).
So, maybe I can choose Home economics for girls and Technology for boys? These termins must help russian schoolers (12-13 years old) to explain English and American kids what school subjects they have at their russian school.
i guess you are right. Then Judith`s Technology might fill the bill here. Mind you, i`ve came across "Technology/Home Economics" quite a few times since i`ve looked into this
here I`ve found a list of lesson plans for "arts and crafts" http://teachers.net/lessonplans/subjects/arts_and_crafts/, and it contains some beautiful ideas, such as "origami butterfly", "Re-Thinking "Mona Lisa" or "Paper Bag Zoo". Judging by the selection of sites i`ve gone through this subject is aimed mostly at younger children, what do you think?
