Science - Other / School subject
Russian term or phrase: урок труда
Hi! I wonder how can I say "урок труда" in English? I mean school subject in which boys learn how to fix something and girls sew or cook. Is it "industrial arts" as offers me Lingvo Dict. or "Design and Technology" as I saw it in Wikipedia? And how can I call a teacher who teaches this subject?

Здравствуйте! Подскажите, пожалуйста, перевод "урок труда" (как школьный предмет) и "учитель труда" на английский. Лингво дает такой пример как "industrial arts", но действительно ли он употребителен? может быть он называется "Design and Technology"?

agree  Kiwiland Bear: I don't think there is an exact equivalent but this is reasonably close. Should convey the idea anyway.

neutral  rikka: позвольте не согласиться, по-моему, arts and crafts звучит как изящный, но бесполезный предмет; в то врмемя как на ур. труда нас девочек однажды заставили, обменяв с мальчишками, клепать из жести СОВОК!

-> Have you actually been to or observed an arts and crafts class? Anyway, the point is providing an English equivalent, not trying to re-create some of the more atrocious Soviet practices, which wouldn't fly here anyway.

neutral  Kiwiland Bear: Things might have changed since my times but, as I remember it, there was nothing about careers there. More like around the house handyman for boys and (ahem) housewife skills for girls.

-> I think this is a regional phenomenon. "Home Ec" is quite dated for NYS. "Home and Careers" is about cooking, sewing and such. Both male and female students are required to take it, as is the case with Technology.

agree  The Misha: Home economics is about right for girls, but it sounds sooooo much like the fifties now. In the modern US context, I'd say Technology/Home and careers is the safest way to go. Maybe the British still say home economics?

-> That's my thought, too, The Misha. Thank you.
