Still it was no use to involve Zhang Yimou as a director of the Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing. The viewers stopped to care who would win after a little Chinese man has won their minds.

agree  Judith Hehir: Right. "ceased to care" would work, though.

  -> Thanks, Judi. Sure, "ceased to care" is good English. Maybe a tad archaic, compared with modern "stopped caring"? Like the chorus in Haendel's Acis & Galatea, which interrupts the aria "Must I mine Acis.." with "Cease, Galatea, cease to weep!"
