Russian term or phrase: свалянный свитер
В основе сюжета – некогда легендарный дирижер, а теперь – всего лишь уборщик Большого театра с парализованными, но не отмершими надеждами и в свалянном свитере из сэконд-хенда.

'clotted' and 'felted' don't really fit - is there an equivalent?

... in a tired old sweater from a thrift shop
Explanation:
If you are translating fiction, then the exact technologically correct description matters little here. What does matter is that the guy is dressed like a bum and looks like sh... Take your pick of adjectives here: worn-out, fatigued, washed-out, bummed-out, etc. I used what I used because personally I look for a certain rhythm in a phrase. Naturally, the thrift store is a bit of otsebyatina, but where I live that's about the only option if you are out for used clothes. Except for the flea market, of course.

felted / baggy/ jumper

Explanation:
i think "felted" does fit here; see the description of the (usually involuntary) felting process:

"Last winter a friend turned me on to the idea of felting wool. The principle here is this: Wool fibers have scales along them, and whenever they are exposed to really high temperatures they tighten and condense up and link more and more inextricably to other fibers around them, making a solid and un-ravel-able mass of fabric. Remember that really nice sweater that your mother/sister/spouse accidentally dried one day, that came out much smaller and much thicker than it went in? That’s wool felting (or "fulling," its more proper term) in operation..."
http://www.greenphonebooth.com/2009/09/recycled-sweaters-woo...

"Wash in sink by soaking and squishing being careful not to rub the wool against itself or it will felt. Basically heat, agitation, and detergent are the enemies of wool, so aim to soak and rinse the dirt out. The good news is, wool is extremely easy to clean with just water.
http://www.wikihow.com/Wash-Wool

and here:

"На сколько мне известно шерсть садится немного по другой причине.
Из-за природной извитости и чешуйностного строения.
Под действием воды, температуры и мыльного раствора волокна шерсти принимают природную извитость (во время чесания-прядения они выпрямляются) и чешуйки волоса раскрываются (волос становится не гладким)и начинают сцепляться между собой.
Если постирать при большей температуре, то потом без разницы в какой воде полоскать - шерсть свойлачится..."

another thing is, wool jumpers can also stretch if you wash them wrong, so maybe here you could say "an old baggy jumper from a second hand / charity shop", somehow if sounds to me more evocative of your character's miserable state than "felted"...

hey, look at this discussion here:

Q:Where can you get baggy jumpers/pullovers?
round necked not v-necked. I Just want a plain-ish baggy jumper that i can wear with skinny jeans but i can't seem to find one anywhere. thanks :)

A: Seriously your best bet for some funky jumpers to wear over skinny jeans is a charity shop, cos alot of the styles in the shops are rubbish at the moment.

A: either buy one too big or after washing one stretch it when wet

A baggy jumper might look fine on a trash-trendy youngster, but definitely does not make anyone look successful. However, "felted" would be the direct translation here, imho.

agree  Rachel Douglas: I agree the technology of production is not the point, especially because "felted" sends the ordinary reader running to the dictionary. For brevity, it could be "a baggy/shapeless sweater." Who cares how it was made, I'm sure it was shapeless.

pilling thrifted sweater

Explanation:
I am a real knitter. This is the term for "свалянный" in English.

"Felted" implies thermal processing. Sweaters could get felted after being washed in hot water. Sweaters pill (form fuzzy balls) as the result of wear --

To Rachel Douglas:
Have you checked the link again (just curious)?
Yes, in knitting circles "thrifted sweater, cardigan etc." are used all the time.
Google agrees. It shows the exact term "thrifted sweater" being used over 200, 000 times.

neutral  Rachel Douglas: What does "thrifted" mean? I checked your link, but it was about oral contraceptives./I know, but people don't say that! "I got a sweater at the thrift shop," not "I got a thrifted sweater" - unless it's some kind of super-recherche knitting cultist term.
