Kunst Museum Explanation: I believe they are talking about the Kunst Museum of St. Petersburg (ex-Leningrad). The Museum was created by Peter the Great as a museum of "curiosities" (freak things of nature). The WHOLE museum is called "Kunst" from the German word for "Art". But in Russian it acquired the meaning of "monstruosity, curiosity". A part of the Museum is dedicated to the "mostruosities" - the Kunst Chamber, but the whole museum became to be know as the Kunst Museum. 7 years of Russia |

Kunstkamera /Kunstcamera Explanation: Kunstkamera (German for "Chamber of Art") Extensive web search has shown that there are NO entries for "Kunst Museum" in St.Petersburg. Instead, there are lots of various Kunst Museums in Germany, Switzerland etc. I suggest therefore using the original German name of this museum, maybe with an explanation in parentheses. You can use German or English transcription (with "k" or "c"). For examples, please see: The Kunstkamera, German for "Chamber of Art," houses the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (not to be confused with the Museum of Ethnography). [COMMENT] Explanation: Nathalia's exhaustive research does pose a problem here...I guess it amounts to what is recognized in English to English speakers (and readers)...not sure where to go here, especially since Dr. Osmar makes so much good sense with the German derivation and the German influence in Russia at the time! Only the asker can decide... . |
