Calculus of Variations (or variational calculus) and Optimal Control Explanation: Please note that the calculus of variations (you might use small chars if preceded with the article "the") is a rather old subject in mathematics. It is a branch of mathematics concerned with the problem of finding a function for which the value of a certain integral is either the largest or the smallest possible. As for the optimal control, it has a large intersection with so-called control theory (field of applied mathematics that is relevant to the control of certain physical processes and systems). Although control theory has deep connections with classical areas of mathematics, such as the calculus of variations and the theory of differential equations, it did not become a field in its own right until the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some relation between the (theory of)optimal control and so-called operations research can also be readily revealed.
