такого рода уточнение мне кажется целесообразным
т.к. play for love - хорошо известное выражение...

Explanation:
Есть относительно устойчивое сочетание goose graze в смысле щипания травы вокруг себя (www.giga-usa.com/quotes/topics/proverbs_t064.htm). М.б. перевести как Being (rather) silly and always "playing for pins" while grazing, geese nevertheless can nip very hard if suddenly win.

As for pin and not pinch - see e.g., www.herald-journal.com/ archives/2002/columns/lj030402.html (students laughing their heads off after the goose nips me in the butt. ..) and weeklywire.com/ww/03-30-98/nash_film-lede.htm (A goose nips at a wounded tiger; the tiger downs the goose with a weary chomp.)
