They ate just enough for not starving

Explanation:

To Admiral: enough -agree,but as for starve:1.-to perish from lack of food;2.to kill with hunger(note-perish-Brit.-to cause to die)-from Merriam Webster\'s Collegiate Dictionary,10 ed.,editor in chief Fr.C.Mish,1997,USA
морить голодом,истощать;3. to starve to death - заморить до смерти.

To Dorine - do you know how many people died from anorexia? And for them, it was reasonable hunger, because it wasn\'t their goal - to die, they just wanted to be skinny. But these characters(M.& J.) weren\'t anorexics, although they were really obsessed with their looks for some reason. M.- because he was very handsome but not gifted, and he knew it, so his appearence was very important to him;J. - wanted to stay young forever(she was about 40).

so much food so as not to feel hungry

Explanation:
In order not to put on weight Michael and Julia were eating exactly so much food so as not to feel hungry.

-----------

2) so much food - конечно же после so much (или as much) нужно поставить существительное

3) not to feel hungry -

--------------------------------------------------

I am sorry !

правильно - so much food as not to feel hungry

или - as much food as not to feel hungry

In order not to put on weight Michael and Julia were eating exactly so much (ИЛИ as much) food as not to feel hungry.

Yelena.

disagree  Yelena McCafferty: so much

just sufficient

Explanation:
Roman!
