agree  Kurt Porter: This has got to be a joke. My non-Russian speaking 6-year old knows what , "da, net, poka and privet" mean just by listening to my friends and I.

Нет (negation)

Explanation:
Negation. As for examples,
U menуa net vremeni = I have no time
U menya net nikogo blizhe tebya = Nobody is more intimate to me but you
In polite interrogative sentences it is also used:
Net li u Vas spichek? - Do you have matches?
Skazhem "Nyet" voine! = Let us say "No" to war!
Na "net" i suda net = No sense to judge something gone all (absent)
etc.

About those questions: ca. ~how a Russian can know nothing about a Russian word?. People simply cannot understand that \"a Russian man/woman\" is not the same notion as \"a person knowing Russian language\":)))

agree  Kurt Porter: Nice expansion. However, I too wonder how the individual doen't know what "nyet" is...Hasn't she ever watched "Rocky and Bullwinkle?" :) :) My point is, lots of people that can't even spell "Russian" know what "Nyet" means.
