Russian to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. / Ethics
Russian term or phrase:моральное уродство
I'm translating a part of a text about possibility of changing oligarchy into tyranny in Russia. Some people's anger gives way to a righteous urge to perpetrate an act of criminal damage, for others - it's tough being neutral these days. The sociologists wonder, what may happen tomorrow. Some of them say, that a pattern of "моральное уродство" was left by godless materialism of Soviet years with the aid of a permanent marker.
"Mоральное уродство" - is a quality of a human, who cannot recognize between good and bad, between virtue and sin, it characterizes Russian Government and it is present in many people.
for your moral support! I don't think anyone would need a context for translating the term that is widely in use. In addition to that, this term is a part of the article headline and it is repeated throughout the text, I would have to provide too much of the context in order to satisfy your request, Valex.
I would not use any of the proposed answers since in my opinion it is not appropriate to use such terms when somebody describes their government. Unless we know the full context, of course.

ethical/moral bankruptcy
Explanation: I believe both of these terms have currency and are easily understood. The question is, are they strong enough for уродство?..

Asker: That is a term I tend to go for, Mikhail! Still thinking though, there are mixed feelings involved, because unfortunates (like tramps or drug addicts) would drop into this category as well, as the filthy rich.
Asker: I thought, that the asker has a right to choose desired answer.
Explanation: It might not be as strong as that. Could be something more like "moral confusion," but that seems weak to me.

Asker: A very nice answer, Judith, but "Moral depravity" sounds like a reprimand to the morally corrupt, then, your provided term, it's like a sad look at with some admixture of a contempt.Russian military bumpkins - is a type of a character due to their professional depravity (!).
