Russian to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. / Ethics
Russian term or phrase: моральное уродство
I'm translating a part of a text about possibility of changing oligarchy into tyranny in Russia. Some people's anger gives way to a righteous urge to perpetrate an act of criminal damage, for others - it's tough being neutral these days. The sociologists wonder, what may happen tomorrow. Some of them say, that a pattern of "моральное уродство" was left by godless materialism of Soviet years with the aid of a permanent marker.
"Mоральное уродство" - is a quality of a human, who cannot recognize between good and bad, between virtue and sin, it characterizes Russian Government and it is present in many people.

ethical/moral bankruptcy

Explanation:
I believe both of these terms have currency and are easily understood. The question is, are they strong enough for уродство?..

Asker: That is a term I tend to go for, Mikhail! Still thinking though, there are mixed feelings involved, because unfortunates (like tramps or drug addicts) would drop into this category as well, as the filthy rich.

Asker: I thought, that the asker has a right to choose desired answer.

moral depravity

Explanation:
It might not be as strong as that. Could be something more like "moral confusion," but that seems weak to me.

Asker: A very nice answer, Judith, but "Moral depravity" sounds like a reprimand to the morally corrupt, then, your provided term, it's like a sad look at with some admixture of a contempt.Russian military bumpkins - is a type of a character due to their professional depravity (!).

loss of moral compass

Explanation:
This very closely matches the definition of a failure to distinguish good from bad. It is not necessarily turpitude, but rather a kind of amorality.

Asker: Thank you, Jim! "Moral compass" - is a powerful, even over-precise term.English language would never die of impurity with you.I've got your implication (!) and totally agree.

Asker: "Loss of moral compass/conduct/direction" probably, is more applicable to times of change - Red revolutionaries and those who were involved in the military coup to overthrow Gorbachov."Mоральное уродство" is an inborn quality.-?

Александра, сначала Вы пишете, что ... that a pattern of "моральное уродство" was left by godless materialism of Soviet years with the aid of a permanent marker. Это и есть СРЕДА. Общее неосознаваемое уродство.
Отдельно взятая личность не различает добро и зло - ориентиры утрачены, т.к. всё вокруг этим заражено --
"it characterizes Russian Government and it is present in many people". А насчет ответа - вам виднее, что ляжет в текст...:)))

Asker: Thank you, George! "moral squalor" is an outer, not inner part of a person, more like an environment he creates and dwells in.
