Conventional truck Explanation: Although there is no context, it is obvious that the original Russian phrase is not a strictly technical terminology, because the word gruzovik may be found in belles-lettres or colloquial speech only. A character in a book complaining of a gruzovik after being splashed over with mud, for instance, will never bother the reader with such technicality as rear-dump or drop-side truck. Just a truck or lorry (B.E.). In a technical publication in Russian, gruzovik is never used, but rather gruzovoy avtomobil (грузовой автомобиль)or its trademark (Kraz, Kamaz, Zil, etc). Depending on the context and the need for translating the message, bortovoy (but not bortovy) gruzovik may be - a truck (lorry) грузовой автомобиль, грузовик - a conventional truck, motor truck, freight car грузовой автомобиль обычной компоновки (бортовой) - drop-side truck грузовой автомобиль с откидными бортами - dump truck (rear or side) самосвал Thank you. |

See below. Explanation: The full Russian term for «bortovoy gruzovik» is «gruzovoy avtomobil' s otkidnymi bortami». The sides of such trucks can be dropped down in order to ease loading operations. The only English term I could find in my dictionaries for this very common vehicle is “drop-side truck” (MultiLex electronic dictionary). Below please see some examples of “drop-side truck”, which I found through a web search: “1/2 Drop Side Truck. This general, multi-purpose truck features a hinged side that drops halfway down to ease loading/unloading operations.” http://www.nvf.com/container/MATHAND.HTM “The Unimog-S 404 is generally fitted with either a 'Koffer' radio-box or a drop-side truck body with a canvas hood.“ http://www.west-4x4.demon.co.uk/page3.htm I also found some examples, where it was called “common truck”; however, “drop-side” seems to be more exact. Best regards, Artyan Electronic dictionaries and web search |
