Speeds in particular directions are the "components" making up the overall velocity - or something like that?? It's all right to say "velocity components" in English, as far as I know, but I'd be interested to hear any informed opinions on this.

Apart from that, I would particularly like to know how an engineer understands the word нормальные in this context.
