Explanation:
По-русски под материальной ответственностью подразумевается личная денежная ответственность. На итальянский это нельзя переводить буквально как "responsabilità materiale", "essere materialimente responsabile" (хотя в одном словаре так, к сожалению, написано), потому что по-итальянски responsabilità materiale значит фактическая, практическая, осязаемая ответственность, в отличие от responsabilità morale, giuridica и т.д.
Пожалуй, и rispondere in proprio не очень подходит, потому что подразумевает личную ответственность, но необязательно денежную.

Если речь идёт о том, что такой-то такой-то является материально ответственным лицом, есть итальянский термин "consegnatario dei beni" (если нужно, погуглите).

Применительно к данному выражению без контекста, к вариантам Дианы и Юлии могу добавить "rispondere economicamente": как мне кажется, это в точности передаёт "денежную суть" этой ответственности.

В данном контексте можно перевести "in caso di furto, il commesso sarà tenuto al risarcimento del danno"? Или "in caso di furto, il commesso risponde economicamente del danno"? (аналогично примеру о книге).

disagree  milatrad: La "responsabilità economica" è un concetto che si usa solo a livello aziendale come il risultato di una gestione.Nel caso il custode non può avere la responsabilità economica del rendimento del carico!, ma ne è responsabile materialmente,deve risarcire.

  -> Cosa c'entra il risultato della gestione? Ha letto e capito gli esempi che ho fatto? Cosa vorrebbe dire il "rendimento del carico"? "Responsabile materialmente del risarcimento" non è italiano...
