Spanish term or phrase: cruzando los pulgares
"Su padre traía una silla de lona, la acomodaba en el patio y se quedaba allí, con los ojos cerrados, ****cruzando los pulgares**** junto a un pequeño arriate de flores cuyo nombre nunca supe."

¿Es una frase idiomática que quiere decir "sin hacer nada" o no?

Explanation:
No creo que sea una frase idiomática pero sí es una frase muy plástica y que se entiende perfectamente. El señor ha cerrado los hojos y ha juntado las manos, probablemente delante de su barriga.
