In het Spaans bestaat de uitdrukking “sin encomendarse a Dios ni al Diablo”. Dios is een metafoor voor het goede, el diablo staat voor het kwaad. "Hacer algo sin encomendarse a Dios ni al Diablo" betekent iets doen ongeacht of het goed of slecht uitpakt, het is je eigen verantwoordelijkheid.
In dit geval is de religieuze lading verdwenen en betekent “sin encomendarse a nadie” dat de twee jongens de deur open doen zonder erbij na te denken, impulsief, zonder te weten wat ze aan zullen treffen. Het is een ondoordachte actie en gevaar lijkt op de loer te liggen. Afhankelijk van de context zou ik het hier vertalen met “onbedachtzaam” of “onbezonnen”, of eventueel “ roekeloos”.
